With the arrival of Easter the Balearic Islands become shrouded in mysticism. Each town on the islands of Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera keeps the popular tradition which commemorates the crucifixion and later resurrection of Christ alive with the important religious brotherhood competitions.

The steps taken to act out the resurrection and crucifixion of Christ are carefully prepared for the processions held on Easter Thursday and Friday. The reason for this religious zeal is not native to the islands but is also celebrated all over the mainland where there are areas that the celebrations are extremely important, above all on the peninsula. The traditions are, nevertheless still alive on the islands although the omnipresence of the sea and tourism as the main reference may give them a more colourful rather than zealous air.

On the Balearic Islands, Easter is not only a religious celebration to commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus but, over the centuries, it has become a very well attended popular festivity, where silence and respect reign and acting out this religious scene brightens up the streets in the different towns and villages.

The 1st March is held Balearic Islands Day. This was the date that in 1983 “Estatuto de Autonomia de las Islas Baleares” (Balearic Islands Act or Statute of Autonomy). To celebrate this day they are held different activities, like as a reward ceremony for distinguished citizens of the Balearic Islands in the last year or music concerts performed by Illes Balears Symphonic Orquestra.

Also is tradition a medieval themed market in Parc de la Mar with good made with ancient techniques( majorcan textiles, candels, traditional pastries, toys, Wrought iron works, shoes, ….).

One of the featured activities is the guided tours to Consolat del Mar, where the Balearic Governament (Govern Balear) has its headquarters to find out how it works and the building. Next to la Lonja (Formerly Wholesale fish market), cultural space is going to reopen soon. El Consolat de Mar is a gothic-style building, formerly a warehouse of La Lonja and several institutions of maritime law from 19th century.

The Catalan rural tourism quality should be measured with spikes

The first spikes of the new model to categorize Catalan rural establishments are already in a total of 88 rural houses in Catalonia.
This project is the result of two and a half years of work to get to unify the different categories of establishments.

To identify these categories the spike is used as a graphical representation:
BASIC, a spike;
COMFORT, two spikes;
COMFORT, three spikes;
SUPERIOR, four spikes;
SUPERIOR PREMIUM, five spikes.

The parameters used to define each category are: the environment of the home and building; interior and exterior spaces; furniture and equipment of the house; services offered to visitors (catering, hospitality, health ...); and complementary available activities.
Over 600 rural Catalan rural houses have already applied to join the classification spikes, open to all homes, whether they are members or not of any industry association.

The main objectives of this new classification system are to improve product identification and characteristics of facilities and services to the user or customer, and improve the international promotion of rural tourism in the area.
